What Attracts Us to Ruby: History by GIA. This video discusses the history of what attracts us to rubies, and how lore and various associations with royalty and passion have played such a critically important role. Ruby gem, the July birthstone, has been esteemed since ancient times, and has long been valued by humans of many cultures. It is mentioned in the Bible as one of the gems used to represent one of the 12 tribes of Israel. In ancient Sanskrit, ruby was called ratnaraj, or “king of precious stones.” Today, by pairing ruby gems with their wardrobes, famous actors and actresses can continue to carry forward the tradition and lore of wearing ruby jewelry.
