Khamaj is one of the ten Thaats (parent scales) of Hindustani music. It is also a specific Raag within the Khamaj thaat. Many ghazals and thumris are based on Khamaj. This Raag is often used in semi-classical compositions by musicians. This Raag is an ideal melodic format for both type of Shringars, Vibralambh (Separation) and Uttan (Union) Shringar and hence, there are more Thumri compositions in this Raag. The mood is light and captivating but not sombre. The mood of Raag Khamaj is well brought out when decorated with diverse Thumri styles of Punjab, Lucknow and Banaras Gharanas.


This baithak was held at the initiative of Ved Gupta, our founder, as a part of bazm e Khas foundation live concerts.
