Twenty two year old Zenifer Deodial gave birth to this country’s first Boxing Day baby for 2024.
Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, visited the first-time mother, her baby, Nathan Ameer Ramnath, and other mothers to celebrate the birth of the first 'Boxing Day babies' for 2024 at the San Fernando General Hospital on Thursday.
Ms. Deodial said Nathan, who came into the world at 1:17am, is not just the first baby to be born on Boxing Day.
"First great-grand to my grandmother, and first grand to my mom, because my mom is the oldest, and she’s the only one who has kids, me and my older brother."
Kardisha Duntin gave birth to the second baby born at the hospital.
Minister Deyalsingh used the opportunity to thank health care workers for their time and dedication in 2024.
"This year you would have heard all mothers at Port of Spain, Mt. Hope, and today saying how wonderful the experience was. except for the pain, of course."
During the visit to the new mothers on the ward, questions on the upgrades to the hospital were posed to the Chairman of the South West Regional Health Authority, Valerie Alleyne-Rawlins.
"The dates we have been given by the providers would be arranged between March and April to complete the exterior, and then we move into the wing extension that’s where the ED is and then we start with Phase 2, which will be the upgrade of the wards, and bear in mind we were doing this project and the Cancer Centre at the same time, so it was two major projects."
In March of this year, the SWRHA indicated that $12 million would be spent on the restoration works.
