NREL’s patented Battery Internal Short-Circuit (ISC) Device is the first mechanism able to accurately simulate a true internal short circuit within a battery cell, providing researchers and battery manufacturers reliable data to determine how the size, resistance, and location of an internal short circuit will impact reactions—from most severe to benign—across a variety of battery designs. NREL partners are seeing the benefits of the Battery ISC Device through testing and modeling of their own battery designs, enhancing the safety and integrity of lightweight, high capacity batteries.
