Communities across the US are facing the converging impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic insecurity, inequality, and climate change. Many communities have a cultural connection to land and build on a history of collective action and mutual aid that comes to the forefront during a time of crisis, keeping communities structurally sound and socially connected. Federal and state programs and policies are being put in place to respond to the immediate threats. Yet we know there will also be a need for long term change. What are the barriers, opportunities, and solutions in advancing climate resilience? How can non-profits come together to support local action while also leveraging long term systems change to support a more permanent climate transition now and in the future?
This session will highlight tools and approaches from SPARCC sites and other cities to advance community-based climate resilience without also leading to gentrification. We will discuss frameworks for supporting investments that provide economic, social, health benefits; integrated infrastructure examples that invest in climate resilience and long term affordability, and workforce strategies that are just and equitable. We will leave with the role that SPARCC partners and non-profits can play to integrate across disciplines to create lasting change.
