Today we shall talk about the recommended frequency of DEXA scans, and the nature of what you should be doing between scans to make them as valuable and worthwhile as possible. So, here are the DEXA scan frequency guidelines.
First up, if you are determined to change your body composition – to lose body fat, gain muscle or both – then you really should consider a series of fairly regular DEXA scans as per our DEXA scan frequency guidelines.
Otherwise, all you have is a starting point. You might know which direction you want to head in but without a second measurement, you’ll never know how far you’ve gone or if you’ve actually arrived and reached your goal. Remember your bathroom scales will NOT tell you how your fat and muscle have changed.
Also, any form of accountability or review – even just yourself – always improves your chances of success with our recommended DEXA scan frequency.
Without a doubt, we see the best results for fat loss and muscle gain from customers who have scans at regular intervals and we recommend that once you’ve had your first, Baseline, scan, you check your progress every 8-16 weeks (every 2-4 months), depending on your primary goal.
If your priority is to lose body fat, then 8-12 weeks is a good time frame because it’s a short enough time to lose a measurable amount of fat – 3/4/5kg or more, but it’s also a long enough period to give you confidence that you can sustain whatever you’re doing until you actually reach your goal.
If your main objective is to gain muscle mass then you could leave your return visit until 16 weeks, simply because gaining lean mass takes longer. Building muscle is a much slower process than fat loss.
