John Josiah Newberry, born in 1877, founded the J.J. Newberry Five and Dime store in 1911. He opened his first store in Pennsylvania and expanded to a few additional stores within the next few years. By 1919, with 17 stores and a half a million dollars in annual sales, the company expanded further. They acquired Britts in 1928 and turned them into J.J. Newberry stores until the 1960s. Beginning in 1962, the Britts Department Stores began as a subsidiary of Newberry for them to enter into the discount store division. When J.J. Newberry passed away on March 6, 1954, there were 475 Newberry locations throughout North America. In 1972, McCrory's parent company, Rapid-American Corporation acquired 439 J.J. Newberry Company stores. McCrory continued opening additional Newberry stores until they themselves began to struggle and filed for bankruptcy in 1992. By 2000, most of the remaining J.J. Newberry stores were renamed Dollar Zone and the last J.J. Newberry Company store closed in 2001. McCrory themselves closed by 2002. #retailrewind
