Sharp coral, poisonous sea urchins, lionfish, stonefish ... This sure seems inviting, right? Let's go have a swim.
So there's a very famous story. My speaker friends all know it well. It's called the Starfish Story. And it's considered a very cliched story to tell on stage. In a nutshell, it goes like this:
A boy is walking on a beach, and he comes across thousands of beached starfish. They're drying out, they're dying, and he begins picking them up and throwing them back in the ocean, one by one.
And a man walks up to him and says, "Kid, what are you doing?"
And he says, "These starfish, they're gonna die. I gotta save them. And so I'm throwing them back in the ocean."
And the man says, "Well, you certainly can't save them all. How can you think you can make a difference for all of these starfish?"
And the boy picks one up off the ground, and he throws it into the ocean. And he looks at the man and he says, "Well, I just made a difference for that one."
Yeah, it's powerful, powerful stuff. And so, honest, I swear I'm not making this up. I was just walking along the beach. Look what I found. A starfish, washed up on the beach. Now, it's fake. It's a toy. But, nonetheless, I think I'm gonna go give it to a kid over here. I don't have enough to give them to every kid here on the beach or at the pool. But I certainly can make a difference for one.
Would you like the starfish?
- [Kid] Whoa!
Would you like a starfish?
- [Kid] Oh!
Would you like it?
- [Kid] Hello! Good morning!
Would you like it?
- [Kid] No.
I found it on the beach.
- [Kid] Okay!
(sad trombone music)
As a doctor, I'm supposed to do no harm, right? That's principle number one.
Hello, would you like a starfish? Would she like a starfish? You like it?
(sad trombone music)
Okay. Traumatized another one. I've already given a couple kids PTSD. I can't give this (beep) thing away. I think they think it's real.
Okay, let's try this one. Maybe Dad will supervise. Would your kids like a starfish? Starfish? Do you like it?
(sad trombone music)
Starfish?
Would you like the starfish?
- [Dad] Wow! Wow!
Wanna play with it? Washed up on the beach.
(chimes)
There you go. All right. I made a difference to that one.
I've got my own Starfish Story.
