Ambassador David Shinn is an adjunct professor in the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University, where he teaches courses on African affairs. He is currently writing a book on China's relations with Africa. He advises or serves on the board of a number of NGOs, speaks to groups around the world, and publishes in various journals. Before becoming a member of the George Washington Faculty, Ambassador Shinn was a career diplomat and served 37 years in the Foreign Service, with assignments in Lebanon, Kenya, Tanzania, Mauritania, Cameroon, Sudan, and as Ambassador to Burkina Faso and Ethiopia. His research interests focus on the Horn of Africa, conflict, Islamic fundamentalism, terrorism, and the role of China in Africa. He has a PhD from George Washington University.
