This news ought to wake you up!
60% of the world’s wild coffee species are threatened with extinction.
What’s going on?
Blame deforestation, disease and climate change.
That’s what a team of researchers from the UK says anyway in a new report published in the journal Science Advances.
It’s a big deal because wild coffee strains help maintain the crop’s diversity and stability.
In plain English, the lead author of the study said the coffee we drink today exists because of access to wild species.
Look, right now, you’re not at risk of losing your favorite coffee.
But long-term, climate change, disease and deforestation might jeopardize coffee’s resiliency.
An even bigger problem?
The multi-billion dollar coffee industry has a lousy backup plan at the moment.
Less than half of the world’s wild coffee species are not kept in seed banks.
And the seed banks that do house wild coffee species aren’t very reliable or well-funded, according to Mashable.
Think handwritten notes about what’s in the collection.
That’s why researchers are asking for policymakers, scientists and coffee farmers to come together to breed more resilient strains.
Wild coffee at risk of extinction.
That news is hard to swallow!
