Dr. Vinay Garodia explains about Vitreomacular Traction or VMT, it’s symptoms and treatment.

The macula is the central area of the retina which is responsible for sharp, clear central vision. VMT or Vitreomacular Traction is a condition where there is a pull on the macula from vitreous causing wrinkling or swelling of the macula. This causes the image being formed at the central macula to be distorted. The patient may experience distorted vision or blurring of vision.

This condition is diagnosed by a thorough retinal examination by retina specialist. Special tests like OCT can help diagnose the disease and in deciding the treatment. Mild case of VMT with no effect on vision may be followed up.

Those with significant symptoms are required to undergo special vitrectomy surgery with peeling of these fine membranes and thus relieving the pull on the macular. Special gas is injected at the end of the surgery and patient needs to maintain a face down position for a week or so after surgery with advanced instrumentation and improved surgeon's experience. The results of this surgery has improved greatly with good visual recovery in most patients.
