Finally, an explanation for that formerly worrying, occasional knock, which could actually be felt through the primary chaincase. It turns out to be a rather more harmless irritation than anything to be alarmed about, and I was able to improve matters by adjusting the rear wheel alignment and the drive chain slightly to ease this minor problem. I believe there may be an additional, non standard fixture in the electric starter assembly, such as a nut or bolt head perhaps, which the chain link has been able to brush against, causing the knock I heard and felt.
