The Parque das Aves/Bird Park is a sanctuary (not a commercial zoo) for birds in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, right beside the Iguaçu National Park. Open since 1994 and built within 16 hectars of Atlantic Rainforest, the park has a large variety of species of birds and more than half of them come from apprehensions executed by the environmental police (IBAMA). Even though its focus is on birds native to the Atlantic Rainforest, the park has received and kept other species native from other ecosystems via donations and relocation (some of these temporary) for several reasons, including due to their constant investment on improving its infrastructure in order to respect as much as possible the needs of the animals that they take care of. The park has also partnered with several conservation programs and invested in reproductive management by breeding species that are threatened, endangered and even extinct in the wild and later reintroduce them to their natural environment with the help of genetic evaluation in order to select and release those that have better conditions to survive in the wild.
