This year the British Foreign Office is marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence from 25 November until 10 December. This campaign ad by the British Embassy in Azerbaijan and Positive Change Youth movement features public figures in Azerbaijan, to raise awareness about violence against women. Initial script read by male public figures mentions widely accepted proverbs and excuses for violence against women, but when the same text is read in the opposite direction, it calls to stop violence and focuses on the importance of changing attitudes.
The script:
This is an important message from us to you:
Azerbaijani men should know that
the more women are afraid of men, the better (national saying)
if you don't hit your daughter, you will [regret and ] hit your knees and. (Azerbaijani proverb)
We have never believed that
We have to speak out when we see someone who is abusing a woman.
We are more than sure that
This is a personal issue of each man. We should not be involved at all.
We cannot accept that
We need to end violence against women.
Anchorman: You should know that we believe exactly the opposite of these and we call you to change.
We need to end violence against women.
We cannot accept that
This is a personal issue of each man. We should not be involved at all.
We are more than sure that
We have to speak out when we see someone who is abusing a woman.
We have never believed that
if you don't hit your daughter, you will [regret and ] hit your knees and
the more women are afraid of men, the better.
Azerbaijani men should know that
This is an important message from us to you!
