The Impressionist Revolution 1874-1886
This talk explores major artists from the eight impressionist exhibitions in Paris and the pivotal role played by the commercial art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel in spreading their fame. Durand-Ruel purchased over 5,000 impressionist paintings and promoted impressionism by curating multiple exhibits within and outside of France. Senior Lecturer David Gariff discusses the work of Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Eva Gonzales, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, and Berthe Morisot. He also highlights Durand-Ruel’s contribution to the movement’s popularity beyond France.
