Barely 48 hours after her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Covid-19 vaccine, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday accused the Centre of doing little to help the states fight the pandemic.
"They are indulging in such a big talk about the vaccine but no one knows when the vaccine will come. For the past few months, they have been busy delivering speeches," Mamata Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat.
Despite repeated assurances about financial support, precious little has been done by the central government, she alleged.
Accusing the central government of encroaching into the rights of the state, Mamata Banerjee reiterated her demand for urgent clearance of GST dues. "If they take away everything, what will the state government do? The state government is also an elected body. They must remember that the state government is the implementing authority," she said.
"Who is treating Covid patients? It is the state health workers, state government doctors. Centre must understand they have to go through the state government. Let them disburse funds, we shall be happy to oblige," Banerjee said, reacting to the BJP's allegation that central schemes were not being allowed in Bengal.
Mamata Banerjee announced that her state health scheme 'Swastha Sathi' will now extend to each citizen in the state. "In Ayushman scheme, they are giving 60% of the money, but where will the renaming amount come from? In our Swastha Sathi scheme, we are bearing the entire cost. So, let them follow suit, why don't they do it?" she asked.
