(7 May 2018) Ohio's roller coaster of a gubernatorial primary season is about to be decided.
Republicans and Democrats will decide their nominees Tuesday after a year marked by ever-fluctuating candidate line-ups, surprise campaign mergers and nasty attacks.
A former consumer watchdog under President Barack Obama pushed into the final days of an unexpectedly close Democratic gubernatorial primary in Ohio against
Democratic candidates include Richard Cordray, who served as consumer watchdog under President Barack Obama; and Dennis Kucinich (koo-SIH'-nich), an ex-congressman with a catchy populist slogan.
National Democrats see opportunity in the seat being vacated by Republican Governor John Kasich (KAY'-sik), who's term-limited. Republicans vow to hold the seat once the primary's behind them.
On Monday, Kucinich punctuated the final push of his "Power To We The People" campaign with a joint appearance in Columbus featuring fiery Bernie Sanders devotee Nina Turner and actor Danny Glover.
"Real Democrats have dynamism. Real Democrats are unafraid of taking on the status quo," Kucinich said, referencing the perception that Cordray lacks excitement.
Asked about Kucinich's words, Cordray told The Associated Press that "those kinds of comments are sort of silly, because it's not really about us. It's about the voters.
"It's about the people of Ohio. They're the ones who run an election. They're the ones who cast their ballots. They're the ones who make the choice," Cordray said.
The Democratic race also includes two lesser-known candidates: state Senator Joe Schiavoni (shuh-VOHN'-ee); and former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Bill O'Neill. With voter turnout potentially low, Schiavoni's popularity in his native Mahoning Valley and O'Neill's support from a pro-marijuana legalization group could throw wrenches into Cordray's chances for an easy victory.
Republicans will choose between Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, a former U.S. senator; and Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor, a former state auditor who's spent the year distancing herself from the Kasich administration.
