The role of a mentor is often a key ingredient to a person’s success. If you’re in a leadership position, it will be helpful to keep in mind some good qualities that all mentors should have, so that you can learn to guide your team and help them grow.
The first quality that all mentors should have is vision. A mentor should always be striving to achieve a bigger vision than what he or she has already achieved. Now, I don’t mean this in a frenetic sort of way. But a mentor should constantly be trying to improve themselves in order to reach their own potential.
Another one of the good qualities that a mentor should possess is the ability to keep their ego in check. If you’re receiving guidance from someone, it’s probably because they are further along their path than you are. You probably sought them out because of their experience. Part of the role of a mentor is to share those experiences, both the good and the bad, so that you can learn from their mistakes and their successes.
A third element of a good mentor is their ability to keep the focus on the mentee. Even if a mentor is busy, it’s important for them to make the other person feel like they matter and that they’re being listened to. Being present is essential because it shows that they care.
These are all good qualities for anyone who has the responsibility of being a mentor. Be honest, be present, and always strive to be better. If you find yourself in the role of a mentor, ask yourself if you’re exhibiting these three characteristics.
