(31 May 2021) Several European nations want Denmark to explain how the United States could eavesdrop from Denmark on leading politicians and senior officials in Europe, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Merkel said that the issue of NSA eavesdropping had already been discussed previously with the United States and Germany, reiterating that "spying among friends" was not acceptable.
Speaking in Berlin at a virtual joint news conference with French president Emmanuel Macron, she said that "what was true then is true today as well".
"I'm reassured that Denmark, the Danish government and the defense minister havesaid very clearly what they think of these matters," Merkel added. "As such, I see a good basis, aside from clearing up this matter, to also achieve truly trustful relations."
With regard to Belarus the chancellor said that "it was very, very good that we announced our measures at the European Council very quickly and decisively. They are right, they are necessary, and the events are regrettable, and the meeting of President Lukashenko and President Putin in Sochi does not make up for it."
