Japan is currently seeing a huge surge in popularity among foreign tourists. In May 2024, the number of visitors reached 3.04 million, a 9.6% increase from the previous year, marking the third consecutive month over 3 million and setting a new record.
This influx of tourists has brought many changes in Japan that you need to know about. Some are positive, some negative, and some are just important to be aware of for your trip.
For example, on the positive side, the new "Greater Tokyo Pass" allows unlimited travel on trains and buses in the Kanto area for a fixed price, available only to foreign visitors. It’s incredibly convenient.
On the downside, the sale of Pasmo Passport IC cards has been discontinued and foreigner pricing is becoming more common.
Additionally, as of July 3, 2024, Japan has introduced new banknote designs, leading to various issues that might affect your travel experience.
