[Lyrics]
Holy was the preacher
Riding on his rig of steel in the rising sun
This was no grim reaper
But a man with a smile who took a pride in a job well done
Oooh, in a blood-red sunrise
He's preaching conversion as you lay down and die
(die)
Just a god-given holy roller
In a god-forsaken land
He didn't choose this killing ground
He didn't want this scrap of land
He's gonna scorch the earth (yeah)
And make the rivers run dry
Until we learn to hate like him
Oh, kill for killing, yeah; live to die
Ride on, you son of a gun
Ride on, ride into the setting sun
Ride on, you son of a gun (yeah) (x2)
You gotta be a hero
For one last time
To prove through your destruction
Killing is a great way of life
There's a wooden cross somewhere
Where they'll bury you down deep
You lie to your people - you lie to yourself
You're in love with death, man, you've got no shame
Ride on, you son of a gun
Ride on, ride into the setting sun
Ride on, you son of a gun (yeah) (x2)
The preacher laughed - the preacher cried
He loaded bullets as he smiled
The congregation sat and wondered
Would they live, or would they die?
Just an ordinary man
With his orders and his plans
In the shadows of a cross
Oooh, in a blood-red sunrise
Take me to Jesus - with Judas my guide
(yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah; no)
Ride on, you son of a gun
Ride on, ride into the setting sun
Ride on, you son of a gun (yeah) (x2)
(oh, yeah)
Ride on, ride on, ride on, yeah
Ride on, ride on, ride on, yeah
Ride on, ride into history, yeah
Ride on, ride on, you bleeding heart
Ride on, ride on, you played no part
Ride on, you feel no pity
Ride on, you feel no pain
Ride it into history

''Son Of A Gun'' is a song from Bruce Dickinson's debut solo album, Tattooed Millionaire. It was released in October, 1990.
'' 'Son of a gun' is an exclamation or a noun in American and British English. Apollo 12 Astronaut Pete Conrad said, upon seeing the Surveyor 3 just prior to touching down on the Moon: "Hey, there it is! There it is! Son of a gun, right down the middle of the road!". It can be used encouragingly or to compliment, as in "You son of a gun , you did it!"
'' 'Tattooed Millionaire' is a hard rock album released in 1990 by Bruce Dickinson. It is his first solo album. The album project began when Dickinson was asked to record a song for the fifth Nightmare on Elm Street movie, which became the song called "Bring your Daughter...to the Slaughter". Collaborating with future Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers, Dickinson began to make a solo album which was fundamentally different from his works with Iron Maiden, sounding much more rock-oriented. "Bring your Daughter..." was not included on the original album but Iron Maiden later recorded a different version that was included on their 1990 album No Prayer for the Dying, which coincidentally became the band's only number one single to date. The introduction to the song "No Lies" is also reminiscent of Iron Maiden's version of "Bring your Daughter...to the Slaughter". All songs written and composed by Bruce Dickinson and Janick Gers, except where noted. ''
'' 'Tattooed Millionaire' was recorded when Bruce and the lads in Iron Maiden had a year off. 1989/90 was a busy year for Bruce with recording this solo album, starring in a TV-series and publishing a book. To get a band together he contacted a friend he met during his time in Samson, Janick Gers. Back then he was guitarist with Ian Gillan who Samson supported on tour in 1980. Other musicians are Andy Carr, bassplayer in the band Three rivers and drummer Fabio Del Rio who then was with the band Jagged Edge.
The album was recorded in Battery studios in London and was produced by Chris Tsangrides. It featured the Mott the Hoople cover All the young dudes (also released as single) which Bruce changed the words for. In the line "My brother's back at home with the Beatles and the Stones" he exchanged the word "brother" to "father", since he thought it was such a long time the original words were written that it fitted better to have his father back at home with the Beatles and the Stones.
The album was a way for Bruce to ventilate his workoholism but he did nothing that he thought would scare people off as it was made "under the watchful eye of the collective", i.e. Iron Maiden. '' (Source:The Bruce Dickinson Wellbeng Network)
