On 28 June 2023, National Voices held an online national conference to bring together primary care leaders and teams, voluntary sector organisations and people with lived experience to discuss priority actions for the future of primary care. The focus of the conference was on making what matters to people matter in primary care. We delivered this event with generous support from Astra Zeneca, Diabetes UK, the Department of Health and Social Care, NHS England and the UK Health Security Agency.
In May 2022, NHS England published the final report in a Stocktake on integrating primary care, undertaken by Professor Claire Fuller. The report was well received across the NHS and all 42 Integrated Care System CEO-designates made a personal commitment to take forward the actions set out within it in their systems and neighbourhoods.
Like National Voices’ vision for the future of primary care, the vision set out within the Stocktake report aims to create more equitable and person-centred care. Also like National Voices’ vision, the vision set out in the Stocktake will take significant systemic and cultural change to achieve.
In marking one year since the report was launched, this session with Shaun Lintern and Professor Claire Fuller, explored reflections from two thought leaders in health and care about:
• the major barriers to creating a shift to more equitable and person-centred primary care,
• what might be possible here and now,
• relevant lessons from other areas of the health and care system, and
• where they see the biggest potential for bringing about change.
This session was chaired by Aleyah Babb-Benjamin, Project and Insight Manager, National Voices.
In this session our speakers were Shaun Lintern, Health Editor, The Sunday Times, and Professor Claire Fuller, practicing GP and Chief Executive Officer, Surrey Heartlands Health and Care Partnership.
