Russian lawmakers have generally welcomed the Bosnian peace agreement signed in Ohio.
But some are calling for Russia to take a stronger peace-making role in former Yugoslavia.
Most deputies in Russia's parliament have welcomed the signing of the Bosnian peace agreement.
SOUNDBITE: (In Russian)
"I welcome peace in Bosnia. I think that the role of the U-S was not only exceptionally great but also positive."
SUPER CAPTION: Viktor Sheinis, Deputy Russia's Choice Party
The warring factions in the former Yugoslavia had been due to come to Moscow to start negotiations until President Boris Yeltsin was rushed into hospital, whereupon the American government took the three sides to Dayton.
Some politicians think that Russia hasn't received enough credit for the part it played in the peace process.
SOUNDBITE: (in Russian)
"If Russia had not supported the peace talks and if we are going into details, if Russia had not supplied its gas, I don't think peace would have been possible."
SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Yushenkov, Chairman Armed Services Committee
Now the debate will turn to how big a role Russia will play in the peace-keeping mission.
SOUNDBITE: (in English)
"As for Russia it is our position whether it is appropriate for us to participate or not. It should be discussed and decided on basis of very attentive analysis of the substance of the agreement."
SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Lukin, Chairman International Affairs Committee
The Russians will now be calling on the West to lift sanctions against Serbia and the Bosnian Serbs before any further talks take place on their peace-keeping role in the region.
SOUNDBITE: (In English)
"I think it is absolutely absurd to speak about any agreement where Serbs and Bosnian Serbs, and Milosevic played so pivotal role, without lifting the embargo."
SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Lukin, Chairman International Affairs Committee
The East-West debate about the future of Yugoslavia hasn't yet been resolved.
