We start with news that North Korea today fired almost twenty missiles off its east and west coasts,... one of which landed in waters south of the de facto maritime border between the two Koreas.
With more, our Bae Eun-ji is standing by at the defense ministry.
Eun-ji, what's the latest.
Devin, South Korea's military said North Korea fired at least twenty missiles,... including at least three short-range ballistic missiles.
One of the ballistic missiles landed in international waters south of the Northern Limit Line, the de facto maritime border between the two Koreas,... just 57 kilometers east from the South's eastern city of Sokcho.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff said this is the first time that a missile has landed close to South Korean territorial waters -- since the two Koreas were separated in 1948.
"This is very unusual and unacceptable. Our military declares that we will be responding firmly."
Despite a warning, at around 1:30 PM,... North Korea fired around a hundred artillery rounds toward maritime buffer zones in the East Sea, that's been set to east military tensions.
South Korea's military said this is a clear violation of the inter-Korean agreement signed in 2018.
In response, South Korea's military fired three precision-guided air-to-surface missiles from F-15K and KF-16 fighters, toward international waters north of the NLL.
This is clearly very serious,... and a step up in terms of provocation from North Korea. What has been the response from the South Korean presidential office?
Shortly after the launch, President Yoon Suk-yeol called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council.
Yoon criticized the North calling it a de facto violation of the South's territory,... and said the regime will need to "pay the price" for its provocations.
He also made it clear that North Korea's attempt to divide South Korean society as well as the South Korea-U.S. alliance... will not succeed... and urged the military to be ready for any additional provocations from the North.
Those at the meeting agreed that this clearly showed the anti-humanitarian side of the North Korean regime,... with such actions being carried out during a period of national mourning -- following the incident that took place in Itaewon over the weekend.
