It is "unlikely" that today's G7 meeting will result in any extension to the Aug 31 deadline for evacuating people from Afghanistan, the Defence Secretary has warned.
Boris Johnson is expected to make a personal plea to Joe Biden to agree an extension during the online summit. Ahead of the meeting, the Prime Minister said it was his "first priority" to ensure the "complete" withdrawal of Britons and Afghans who helped the UK during its 20-year mission in the country.
The leaders of the G7 group of nations – the US, UK, France, Germany, Canada, Japan and Italy – will hold a virtual meeting from 3:30pm today, with Mr Johnson expected to receive much support in pushing back the deadline. It is the first time they have gathered since the fall of Kabul on Aug 15.
But Ben Wallace appeared downbeat about the prospect of any movement, highlighting "public statements" from both President Biden and the Taliban that suggested there would be no change to the date.
