Horrible Today: Steamboat Geyser Erupted in Yellowstone park Spews Giant Hot Mud 1,600 Feet Into Air
Yellowstone National Park is a rich geological wonderland, from vast volcanic landscapes to bubbling cauldrons of irises. But one of its 10,000 thermal features has recently caught everyone’s attention: Steamboat Geyser. The world’s tallest active geyser, Steamboat can shoot superheated air nearly 400 feet into the sky.
Its eruptions are erratic, with intervals between major eruptions ranging from four days to 50 years. But in March 2018, the geyser began a dazzling display that shows no signs of slowing down. The geyser’s 129 eruptions since its inception exceed the total seen from Steamboat in the previous half-century.
