Top Homeschooling Myths || I can’t homeschool
One of the most common homeschooling myths is that “I can’t homeschool.” Whether it’s from well-meaning friends and family or people invested in the school system like teachers and administrators, their critiques can wreak havoc on our confidence in educating our children. I am a former teacher turned homeschooler and I know from experience that you are the best teacher for your child.
These critiques will even lead some parents to question themselves, “can I homeschool if I didn’t graduate?” or “can I homeschool if I’m not smart?” I’m here to tell you that you can homeschool! You can homeschool if you’re a Rhodes scholar or if you didn’t even graduate. Most parents also wonder, how do I know what to teach my homeschooler? Don’t fret, I have you covered.
In this video I will share four tips to encourage parents who want to homeschool, but feel unqualified to do so. So let’s look at where to start in homeschooling.
TIP ONE || Access Grade Level Standards in your state to get a sense of what type of topics your can expect to cover and what skills kids at this age can typically demonstrate.
TIP TWO || Use an open and go curriculum that includes all subjects laid out in an easy to teach layout. All materials are included, and prep time is very little.
TIP THREE || Access homeschool resources online. Whether it’s a podcast or you tube channel you subscribe to (Have you hit subscribe here yet?), there are many homeschool resources online like tutorials, read-alouds, curriculum for elementary, curriculum for middle school and curriculum for high school. You can even utilize the internet to find co-ops for homeschoolers if your child is older and needs to take classes that you’re not prepared to teach.
TIP FOUR || Use Teacher’s Guides with curriculum—this can help even the most unexperienced teacher feel confident. Tips for teaching, explanation of education jargon and terms, activity ideas and tips for further assistance can be found in the teacher’s guide of curriculums. Don’t skimp on these.
