STORYLINE:
Northern Alliance soldiers held a military parade on Saturday in the village of Jabal Os Saraj, Northern Afghanistan, 70 kilometres north of Kabul.
Spirits were high as the troops, who had exchanged their traditional dress for new uniforms, performed training exercises for spectators.
The new uniforms did not seem to come with standard issue boots and soldiers wore their own footwear - some had slip-on leather shoes.
The soldiers were heavily armed with guns and had showed off a number of armoured military vehicles, but there were no tanks to be seen in the parade.
The parade took place some ten kilometres from the frontline, and explosions from American bombs could be seen in the distance.
