In this YouTube video, Steve and Aram walk you through their entire process for creating a stunning modern contemporary style coffee table using epoxy resin! We started off by creating a custom HDPE mold from pieces of HDPE purchased at a local supplier here in New Mexico. We also purchased this piece of wood from a local supplier and it looked like it had a couple of burn marks and some debris. After creating the custom mold we went ahead and squared off the piece, sanded it down really nicely, and discarded the debris and burn marks. From there we actually used a bit of Upstart Epoxy Art Resin on the underside of the wood to adhere it to the HDPE mold. This was to ensure that the piece did not move during the epoxy resin pour. Once we had it in the form we went ahead and mixed up several gallons of Upstart Epoxy Deep Pour Epoxy. Roughly 3 gallons of the epoxy resin and 3 gallons of the hardener mix. We also used a liquid pigment this time around as we wanted to achieve a true and pure jet black finish. No metallic pigments were used in this creation. Once we had the epoxy resin and pigment mixed together it was time to pour! We went ahead and poured all of the epoxy resin into the mold and it filled up beautifully! It is very very important to use a heat gun or torch after pouring your epoxy, especially when using black pigment because bubbles are very noticeable so it took hey careful attention to detail to make sure no bubbles surfaced and that all bubbles were popped. This is crucial. From there we let the project cure for three days and took it out to be sanded down. There was a small excess of epoxy that needed to be planed down so we went ahead and did that in order to reveal the piece from underneath the excess epoxy resin. The beauty was starting to shine as we sanded the piece heavily. After planning, sanding, and cutting all sides with a bandsaw we had a clean and sophisticated look. To further the appearance we went ahead and used a bevel to create a chamfered edge. This made the piece appear more refined. Once all of the steps were done we brought the table back inside and prepared it for our signature flood coat. Flooding your peace with epoxy resin is advantageous for a few reasons. The most notable is that the piece is made more durable with this protective layer of beautiful glossy finish. Should anything ever happened to the surface of your coffee table you can simply sand it back down and flood it once again. We again used the Upstart Epoxy Resin Table Top Epoxy Resin and gave it a good generous flood coat. Make sure to use your spatula to evenly distribute the epoxy resin over the surface of the coffee table in order to achieve a cohesive feel. Once you are finished with the flood coat you will let the coffee table cure for another two days and in order to rid of the underside drips you can take the piece back outside and sand the drips off from the underside. This ensures a nice clean underside and a nice clean tabletop. From there it was all downhill as we installed some really cool sophisticated-looking legs that we got on Amazon. We measured those out and screwed them in and the modern coffee table was complete!
