Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) has announced a nationwide teachers strike to begin on Monday next week as the second school term opens. This follows protracted negotiations between the union and government over a pay rise, which the teachers say government has failed to effect. Earlier, UNATU issued a 90-day ultimatum to government to implement the pay rise but the ultimatum expired without government acting.
