semios, derived from 'semiotic' - pertaining to signs. [Semiosis (from the Greek, sëmeiosis, a derivation of the verb sëmeio, "to mark"), refers to any form of activity, conduct, or process that involves signs, including the production of meaning.
Briefly, semiosis is sign process. The term was introduced by Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) to describe a process that interprets signs as referring to their objects, as described in his theory of sign relations, or semiotics.
the composer, himself originally from Argentina, has based some harmonic, melodic and gestural aspects of the worok on a few notes and rhythms representing an 'imaginary tango' atmosphere
semios (2009-II) was written for Tzenka Dianova. the piece was commissioned with a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.
