A timelapse video recorded over just 35 minutes on Thursday (August 5) shows how rapidly a wildfire in the southern Turkish town of Milas spread.
Video shot by local photographer Selahattin Celik on Thursday (August 5) showed the pace of fierce flames consuming trees and undergrowth until the smoke smothers the camera's view.
Celik said he documented the scene to draw attention to the deficiencies in efforts to extinguish the blaze. He said he has been covering wildifires from the onset.
"I saw the shortcomings. I saw the struggle of local people as well as fire crews but I also witnessed the lack of strategy and planning. I wish I didn't have to take this video," he said,
Firefighers said on Saturday (August 7) a blaze in southern town of Milas was brought under control as an outbreak of wildfires entered its 11th day.
Tens of thousands of hectares of forest have been destroyed in Mediterranean and Aegean provinces in what President Tayyip Erdogan has called Turkey's worst ever wildfires. Eight people have died and thousands of Turks and tourists have fled.
