The single most important research-based learning strategy that deserves our attention is retrieval practice. Researchers have been telling us for the past 20 years or so that retrieval is necessary to consolidate learning in long-term memory.
Retrieval Practice is an instructional strategy that asks students to recall or remember knowledge from memory. Teaching is more than just dumping information into the brains of our students. We teach because we want our students to use what they are learning to have a successful life. When students recall and use what they have learned, that’s retrieval.
