"Goyathlay", (a.k.a.: "Geronimo"), (Mescalero-Chiricahua: "Goyaałé", Athabaskan: "kòjàːɬɛ́", 'the one who yawns'), is a prominent leader, War Chief & Medicine Man from the Bedonkohe band, of the Ndendahe Chiricahua Apache People. Grandfather Goyathlay was born into this world on June 16th 1829 and he crossed-over one final time to the Spirit world, February 17th 1909. While he was a prominent leader, he wasn't a Principal Chief (Nantan), like his father-in-law Chief Cochise was, but, rather, a Medicine Man. Although, he was given the title and honour of "War Chief" on various occasions. Since, he was a superb leader in raiding and warfare, he frequently led numbers of 30 to 50 Apache warriors, although, his smaller parties were also potent. "Apache" is the collective term for several culturally related groups of Indigenous Americans, resident in the Southwest United States. The current division of Apachean groups includes: the Western Apache, Chiricahua, Mescalero, Jicarilla, Lipan and Plains Apache (formerly known as.: Kiowa-Apache).
