The Helmand River is one of Afghanistan’s most important and longest rivers, flowing approximately 1,150 kilometers (710 miles) from the Hindu Kush mountains in central Afghanistan through southwestern Afghanistan and into eastern Iran, where it ends in the Sistan Basin.
Geographical Significance
The Helmand River originates in the Hindu Kush mountains and traverses several Afghan provinces, including Uruzgan, Helmand, and Nimruz, before reaching Iran. It is one of the longest rivers entirely within Afghanistan’s borders and a major water source for this mostly arid country.
