Colombians went to the polls to choose a new president on Sunday (31/05), with a surprise candidate who promises to make a strong showing. A poll late on Saturday indicated 30.5 percent support for
Conservative Party candidate Andres Pastrana, followed by ruling Liberal Party candidate Horacio Serpa with 26.7 percent and Sanin with 25.3 percent. Current President Ernesto Samper cannot run for re-election. Security was tight for the poll. The 250,000 strong army was on alert. Soldiers patrolled streets and searched vehicles at
roadblocks.
