(28 Sep 2020) Thousands of protesters supporting Catalan independence gathered in Barcelona on Monday, expressing anger at a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling that barred regional president Quim Torra from office after he disobeyed the country's electoral law.
Demonstrators marched down Barcelona streets demanding independence, with some throwing pig heads at police, and others setting fire to trash cans in the street.
A smaller group of protesters forced their way into a closed park to reach the parliament building located inside, throwing rocks and guardrails towards police.
The protests were sparked after the court's ruling earlier on Monday, which upheld a previous decision to remove Torra as the chief of the north eastern region, after he refused to remove a banner displayed on a public building before the 2019 general election which called for the release of imprisoned separatist leaders.
The ruling has triggered a new period of political uncertainty in the northeastern region where a demand by some for independence has caused the country's biggest constitutional crisis in decades.
