Curiosities
The Ginkgo is a very primitive tree. Its origins are in the Mesozoic as fossils demonstrate. The survival of this species is due to the Buddhist monks who planted Ginkgos around their monasteries in the belief that they protect against fires, considering them sacred trees. Ginkgos are dioic trees which means that there are female and male trees. The female ones produce a false fruit because it’s an ovule which, if there is no male tree nearby, remains unfertilized. In street plantations the male ones are preferred because the ovules that fall to the ground ferment and produce a nauseating odour. The edible seed, uncooked or toasted, has a similar flavour as the chestnut.
Ginkgo biloba, commonly known as ginkgo or gingko (both pronounced /ˈɡɪŋkoʊ/), also known as the maidenhair tree, is the only living species in the division Ginkgophyta, all others being extinct. It is found in fossils dating back 270 million years. Native to China, the tree is widely cultivated, and was cultivated early in human history. It has various uses in traditional medicine and as a source of food.
The gingko biloba's uniquely fan-shaped leaves start out green but change to golden-yellow in the fall. Before the whole leaf turns golden, there is sometimes a stage during which the leaf is two-toned, with separate bands of gold and green. The common name "maidenhair" was inspired by the fan shape of the leaves, which reminds people of the maidenhair fern (Adiantum spp.). The bark on older specimens of the tree becomes deeply furrowed.
