(1 Apr 2014) A member of the radical Ukrainian nationalist group Right Sector was detained late on Monday in Kiev over his involvement in a shooting near Independence Square, the centre of the Ukrainian revolt that led to ouster of the pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych.
Officials said a city government official was among three people injured in the incident.
The shooting was thought to be about a misunderstanding between a self-defence unit and the Right Sector about the future of the barricades and tents in Maidan, the Ukrainian name for the Independence Square.
Police later surrounded the Dnipro hotel in central Kiev, which Right Sector has commandeered as it headquarters, in an effort to persuade the group to hand over any weapons in its possession.
