India officially banned duram wheat exports (HS code: 1001), moving it into the ‘prohibited’ category with effect from 13 May 2022. The implications for India and other countries include exerting upward pressure on global wheat prices. Shipments will be allowed where irrevocable letters of credit have been issued before the notification date of 13 May. The government is open to allowing exports to neighboring and other vulnerable developing countries for their food security needs, but a separate request will need to be submitted by their respective governments.
