The Cranberry Lake 50 Ultra. We hiked 53 miles in one day in 17 brutal and painful hours! Before this hike i felt nervous and overwhelmed because i had never hiked more then 25 miles. 25 miles in the high peaks is not the same. The mileage hurts worse then the climbing. I still cant believe what we accomplished. It is true that if you want something bad enough and put your mind to it anything is possible! Our feet were soaked for 50 miles. It had rained all night and several times during the day. There are so many marshes with chest high grass covering the trail so doing it after or during a rain storm leaves you soaked. You have to cross several beaver dams though very mudy sections. I Highly reccomend starting the loop clockwise because the beaver dams will get you soaked so it’s better to do them at the end of the day then at the beginning. Aftermath.... my toenails were floating on my toes from being soaked and beaten.. one needle hole to relieve pressure resulted in a waterpistol of blood and puss on my car door. My leg muscles felt completely fatigued. My right leg specifically felt swollen in the shin area and i was physically unable to walk or move my foot without some of the most severe pain i have ever experienced. When we got back to the car it was late and we were beaten way beyond what i could express. We were so overjoyed to see the car that we both started crying... We didnt know how to process our emotions and what we had just done. Im so proud of us and im so glad its over and we made it out safetly. 53 miles, 4058 feet of gain in 16:49 minutes with no breaks and hiking as fast as humanly possible!
Edit.. After some time has passed I keep on looking back at this day as being one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. It truly puts things into a different perspective and I’m so grateful for the experience regardless of how painful it was in the moment. I wouldn’t change it for the world. It truly did something to us physically because there has never been another hike again to put anywhere or tear on my body. Everything less than 50 miles just seems easy now! And I actually do look forward to finishing the rest of the NEU8!
Edit again June 14/2020
Just Completed three more ultras in the last month including the TCT which was 38 miles. 38 miles felt like nothing. But it was a shorter version of the cranberry 50 with more hills. Highly suggest doing the TCT before the cranberry 50 as it’s the perfect gateway to increase your trail mileage!
