(5 Aug 2015) President Barack Obama depicted a looming US congressional vote on the Iran nuclear deal as the nation's most consequential foreign policy debate since the authorization of the Iraq war, a now unpopular decision that still reverberates through American politics.
Joe Cirincione, President of Ploughshares Fund, a global security foundation focusing on nuclear proliferation, called the President 'completely committed' in what is his final push for a successful deal with Iran in the eyes of the American Public.
Cirincione says the international implications of killing the deal in Congress are severe, saying close partners would 'question the ability' of U.S. commitments on any other deals.
Cirincione added that as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to stand as opposition to Obama's plan, the President 'did all he could' to ensure Israel's safety and security was considered.
