Quick explanation about how to enable dead and unused button in Volkswagen #GolfMK7 (5G) center console. You can use them to control 3rd party electronics like gate opener, garage clicker, exhaust valves, immobilizer. I'm planning to wire one #button to trunk release mechanism as a part of power tailgate retrofit project in this car.
➡️ Remove button assembly
You can disassemble center console or try to remove button by pushing them out form underneath. You need to remove gear knob trim to do that.
➡️ Disassemble
Each button holds by 3 latches.
Bottom assembly cover holds by 6 latches.
Each button insert holds by 4 latches.
➡️ White and black inserts
Black ones are used for buttons that are inactive.
White ones are used for active buttons.
➡️ Wiring and Pinout
Each button creates short to ground on its individual pin. You can use this signal to control 3rd party accessories as well as connect it to original wiring to control OEM features that were not active from the factory (like ESP OFF button, trunk release). Some features will require additional #activation with diagnostic interface like VCDS, OBDeleven, etc.
