Pedra da Gávea is the tallest mountain in Rio de Janeiro and the world’s tallest coastal monolith. It is composed of granite and gneiss and rises 2,769 feet (844 meters) from the sea at its base. Its name means “Rock of the Topsail,” referring to its uniquely contoured, massive sheer cliff faces. In this video, we make our way from the end of Estrada Sorimã in the São Conrado neighborhood to its lofty summit. Most climbers book a guided tour to this destination. While most of the route is a relatively easy class 2 scramble with a few class 3 moves, there is one section called the Carrasqueira that requires technical rock climbing skills. Tour groups will rope up their clients here, but we choose to free-solo climb this section. It is physically challenging, but the breathtaking vistas of Rio’s coastline, mountains, and the expansive cityscape far below make all your effort worthwhile.
