Sphagnum Moss is a family of over 380 recognized well-known species of mosses referred to as peat moss. However, the term also applies to peat. This plant clumps can store water because living and expired plants can retain moisture in significant amounts inside their cells.
Because of the phenolic chemicals present in the moss's cell walls, the peat made from it does not decompose quickly. Bogs, such as wetlands, create anaerobic ground conditions, which results in slower anaerobic decomposition instead of aerobic microbial activity.
By absorbing cations like magnesium and calcium, it releases hydrogen ions and can also acidify its environment. Living Sphagnum has a unique structure to thrive in watery environments. Water compliments in this plants, removes the need for other support systems.
