Golf is a lot more fun when it is sunny out than when it is raining. But there will be occasions when you won’t be able to cancel your round and will need to play through all the same, for example when you have a competition or when your golf friends rely on you. The first things you will need are waterproofs. When it isn’t raining too hard you can get away with a waterproof sleeveless jacket but when it is pouring out you might need the full rain kit of a long sleeve jacket and pants. If possible, these should fit quite closely to your body so they do not restrict your movements when playing and swinging the club. Unless it is also quite windy out you may bring a good and wide umbrella. A nice waterproof bucket hat is also a must have in order to keep your head warm and dry.

You should also try to store many pairs of older gloves in your bag. That will give you the option of changing gloves every couple of holes and keep your hands - and grips - dry. Note that there are ‘rain’ golf gloves that actually grip the club better when they are wet so you may consider packing a pair of those also.

In order to keep your hands and the grips of your clubs dry you may also want to put a few towels inside of your golf bag. That gives you the option of retiring the towel that hangs outside of your bag every couple of holes when it becomes too wet and replacing it with a dryer one.

The priority when playing golf in the rain is to keep your grips dry. Newer grips will perform better in the rain than older ones so it might be a good idea to replace your grips if you haven’t done so in a while. Try upgrading to grips that feature cord imbeds as these will keep your grips ‘grippy’ even when they are wet, either from sweat or the rain.

Finally, just remember that playing golf in the rain is tough but that it is tough for everybody. Sure you might not play your best golf when it is pouring outside but when you are playing a match under those conditions, just try to let the rain affect your game less than it will your opponent’s.
