He will discuss the roots of this backlash and consider its implications for the future of American power and the liberal international order.
Following the presidential election in the US, MEPs will discuss the future of EU-US relations under the new administration on Wednesday afternoon.
The debate with Council and Commission representatives on the implications of Donald Trump’s victory for transatlantic relations is expected to centre on a variety of issues, including future EU-US cooperation on Russia, China, the Middle East and climate change.
On security and military cooperation, Members of the Republican Party have been calling for a reduction in US military assistance to Ukraine and the future US president has criticised Europe for not spending enough on defence. Trade between the US and EU is also expected to be debated as the president-elect has indicated his intention to impose new tariffs on certain products from Europe.
