Large natural rainbow Tanzanite gemstone originating from Tanzania. This weighs 16.15 CTS and has been cut and faceted into a square shape. The measurements are approximately 15.7 x 15.6 x 6.6 mm.
The stone has a rich blue coloring with undertones of purple. The optical effects on this piece is quite impressive, and exhibits a strong sparkling effect as shown in pictures. The gem also has several internal rainbow type inclusions as best seen in the supplied video.
The gemstone has a good transparency but cannot be considered flawless as there are visible natural inclusions and variations. These inclusions are actually what gives the stone many of its unique visual properties.
The stone is in great condition with no notable damage or chips. There is a few very faint surface marks but is otherwise near perfect..
Tanzanite is considered one of the most rare gemstones in the world, and is known to be more rare than diamonds. It is estimated that the stone is up to 1000 times more rare than diamonds. It is only found in northern Tanzania near Mount Kilimanjaro. It is estimated by analysts that once the current supply runs out, the remaining pieces will be "heirloom" items.
Tanzanite belongs to the zoisite family of stones, and is the blue /violet variety. It is a trichroic stone, meaning it has the ability to show three different sets of color hues depending on the angle on which its viewed. It is also considered to be a birthstone of December.
