When Do Parents Typically Look At Moving Toward Transitional Services?
● As Early As Possible
● Can Be Included In The IEP Meetings Starting Around Age 16
○ Defines Goals Your Child Will Need In The Future
Finding Transitional Services;
1. Ask the school
a. Many Teachers / Administrators work directly with folks who supply these types of services
2. Ask Your Insurance Company
a. Some insurance companies cover all or a portion of these critical services
3. Ask Communities Of Parents In Similar Situations
a. Online communities or school groups
4. Local Family Support Service
a. Many states offer services such as vocational rehabilitation services.
i. Educational Job Training And Assistance
ii. For Individuals Who Might Not Gain Suitable Employment On Their Own

The critical thing to remember through this process is it has to do with what your child wants, not necessarily your idea of their future.
Every situation is different; that’s a fact.
Depending on the disability an individual has, some parents may have legal control of some or all of their adult children’s life path.
But even then, try to involve your adult child as much as possible.
In most cases, just the feeling an individual receives when making decisions about their own lives instills self-confidence and independence.
Ask questions, solicit your child’s feedback, and help guide them safely toward adulthood.
Take a deep breath… just like every single portion of the path you have already trudged through…
