STORYLINE:
Serbian President Boris Tadic on Tuesday was awarded the Council of Europe North-South prize, in recognition of his political actions for the reconciliation of the Balkans.
Tadic, who was handed the award at the Portuguese parliament by his counterpart Anibal Cavaco Silva, was also recognised for his work towards the integration of his country in the process of European construction.
In his speech, Tadic said the Balkans were still dealing with the effects of the 90's conflict, adding it was "critically important for all the countries in the region to unconditionally condemn and prosecute war crimes and those who committed them."
An award was also handed to Tunisian Souhayr Belhassen, the president of the International Federation of Human Rights for her long time commitment to human rights in the world and fighting for the rights of women in developing countries.
Tadic arrived in Lisbon on Monday for a two day visit that included meetings with Portugal's president, and also Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, to increase the cooperation and economic relations between the two countries.
